The Prince of Wales awaits: Pub Crawl in Shrewsbury

Last updated : 18 January 2012 By exiledessexboy

Shrews favourite son Charles Darwin, evolved into a good centre back we hear

Shrewsbury is a good old-fashioned market town and it's always a fine place to visit for visiting some decent pubs, however with the new ground so far out of town some changes have had to be made to the usual schedule, hopefully without a drop in quality!

In the ground

Alcohol is served to away fans within the stadium before the game but the bars close 15 minutes before the kick off, before opening again at half time. Very hospitable.

In the Town

The Prince of Wales; 30 Bynner Street, SY3 7NZ.

A CAMRA Good Beer Guide listed pub, which is a good start, and a charming one at that with good value lunch meals. Bowling green out the back and an excellent choice of real ales as you would expect.

They have their own website here: www.princeofwaleshotel.co.uk/

The Prince of Wales: bottom right between Trinity St. and Betton St. Going south from town centre and rail station; ground, keep going south to reach the Charles Darwin, Brooklands & the stadium!

Nearer the ground

The Charles Darwin;
Sutton Rd. SY2 6HN.

Well, there had to be! 10 minutes walk away from the ground, with 70 car parking spaces, a good chippy opposite, and some fine beer inside!

Now, the excellent www.footballgroundguide.com tell us that they charge £5 to park, but you get one free drink at the bar with the parking ticket!

You can get there by turning right from the stadium along the B4380 Oteley Road. Take the second left into Sutton Road and the pub is down on the right.

The Charles Darwin; right square, Sutton Rd., pub opp. Tilstock Cres.

Brooklands Hotel; Mill Road. SY3 9JT.

About 5 minutes walk away. It has about 100 car parking spaces that also used to cost £5 each.

The Brooklands Hotel is situated on Mill Street. From the stadium turn left along the B4380 Oteley Road. Head around the large roundabout towards Shrewsbury Town Centre. Then turn left into Roman Road and then left again into Mill Street. The hotel is down on the right.

The guide also tells us that the pub ran a coach to the stadium for each home game, which away supporters can use for £2.50 if there is space.

One to check, but an extra pint if true and you can get on it!

Brooklands Hotel: Left this time on Mill Rd., off the roundabout the B4380 (Oteley Road) and the ground.

And just to prove it.........

Stadium; bottom right in the space, above the A5 and below the B4380.
