Monkey Hangers & Lions out of the Cup, Foxes 9 points clear in the League

Last updated : 26 January 2009 By Shrimpers24

FA Cup holders Portsmouth were dumped out of the tournament by Swansea in the fourth round tie at Fratton Park.

On-loan Southampton striker Nathan Dyer put the cup holders behind after 26 minutes then Jason Scotland netted another on the stroke of half time and they held onto this 2-0 lead to pour more pressure on Pompey boss Tony Adams.

Dimitar Berbatov sent his former side Tottenham Hotspur out of the competition after Paul Scholes' deflected strike cancelled out Roman Pavlyuchenko's opener for the visitors at Manchester United.

Kettering came agonisingly close to forcing a replay against Fulham as Curtis Westcarr twice (36 & 83) equalised for The Poppies, the second time from the penalty spot, after Simon Davies and Danny Murphy had put The Cottagers in front, but then Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora netted in the closing stages.

Aston Villa had the majority of play and chances at the Keepmoat Stadium but Doncaster held on for a goalless draw and could have won had Martin Woods' late free kick that clipped the post not curled quite so much. Woods also hit the bar in the first half from a superb 25-yard volley. Gabby Agbonlahor also had an effort that skimmed the bar before flying over in the second half.

Chelsea had another tough day against lower-league opposition as Ipswich Town made them work for the win at Stamford Bridge. Michael Ballack's brace (16 & 59) and Frank Lampard's late strike gave them vicory, but Town were level at the interval due to another goal conceded from a set piece when Alex Bruce netted from close range.

Two goals on the stroke of half time ended this Hartlepool's hopes against West Ham. First Valon Behrami netted with a left-foot strike, then Mark Noble netted a spot kick.

This game was marred by fighting, before and during the game at the KC Stadium which saw Michael Turner and Ian Ashbee both hit the net for Hull to send Millwall out of the competition.

Martin Paterson's late goal gave Burnley a 2-2 draw against West Brom at The Hawthorns. Graham Alexander put The Clarets ahead with a penalty after 25 minutes but this only lasted for six minutes before Robert Koren equalised with a superb 20-yard half-volley and then Kim Do-Hoen's deflected free kick in first-half injury time gave The Baggies the lead before the 89th minute equaliser.

Marvin Emnes' late goal gave Middlesbrough a 2-1 victory at Wolves. Afonso Alves, who has scored all Boro's cup goals this year put his side ahead just before half time, but Sam Vokes equalised just after the hour mark before the Dutchman's goal seven minutes from time.

Sunderland drew 0-0 with Blackburn in the all-Premier League clash at The Stadium of Light.

Sheffield United progressed at the expense of fellow Championship side Charlton. Danny Webber and Lee Hendrie both netted stylishly either side of the interval and Charlton could not get back on level terms despite Chris Dickson's 69th minute goal.

Jay DeMerit, Jack Cork, Will Hoskins and Gregorz Rasiak gave Watford a 4-3 victory over Crystal Palace despite Clint Hill's strike and two late Paul Ifill goals.

Finally, substitute Elliott Ward's goal gave Coventry victory at Torquay.

Leicester City 4 Huddersfield Town 2

Matty Fryatt notched his 24th goal of the season as Leicester twice came from behind to see Huddersfield and extend their lead at the top of the table.

Huddersfield forward Phil Jevons gave the visitors a surprise early lead on five minutes as their good under recently-appointed boss lee Clark looked set to continue.

The league leaders pulled level just six minutes, Michael Morrison smashing home from close range after the Terriers defence failed to clear a Leicester corner.

Keigan Parker struck for the visitors on 50 minutes to restore their lead but Bruno Berner headed his side level before Fryatt struck, and a header from Jack Hobbs, on loan from Liverpool, wrapped up the points.

Oldham Athletic 3 Stockport County 1

Oldham continued their relentless play-off charge as they saw off local rivals Stockport in impressive fashion, extending their home run to just one loss in 20 games at Boundary Park.

The home side started like an express train and went ahead after only three minutes through Danny Whittaker.

Lee Hughes doubled the lead on 18 minutes after linking up with veteran striker Dean Windass as Oldham threatened to run riot.

Oli Johnson finished from close range just five minutes before the break to halve the deficit but Chris Taylor ensured Oldham enjoyed a comfortable last 30 minutes, finishing off a move that involved Windass once more in the build-up.

Scunthorpe United 2 Leyton Orient 1

Managerless Leyton Orient slipped further into relegation trouble as the Londoners extended their winless run to ten games in all competitions.

Paul Hayes finished off a Martyn Woolford cross two minutes from half-time to put Scunthorpe in the driving seat.

But Ryan Jarvis produced a moment of magic 12 minutes after the break to lay on a cross for Dean Morgan to pounce and level for Orient.

Just as Leyton Orient were dreaming of a rare away-day point, Garry Thompson put Scunthorpe - unbeaten in 16 home games - back in front on 65 minutes.

Leeds United 3 Peterborough United 1

Super-sub Jermaine Beckford scored with his first touch of the game as Leeds' top scorer inspired his side to a hard-fought win over Peterborough.

Beckford showed his predatory instincts on the hour mark when, having just come off the bench, he pounced on the loose ball after Posh keeper Joe Lewis could not hold Bradley Johnson's stinging free-kick.

Beckford had his second of the match and 21st of the season when he shot low into the bottom corner after fine work from recent signing Lee Trundle.

Craig Mackail-Smith gave Darren Ferguson's men hope with his tenth of the season with ten minutes to go but Jonathan Howson made sure the points stayed in Yorkshire with a fine strike in stoppage time.

Tranmere Rovers 4 Carlisle United 1

Tranmere kept up their promotion push as they snatched all three points thanks to four second half goals.

The game remained all square at the break but burst into life just three minutes into the second half as Ian Moore scored.

Four minutes later Gareth Edds doubled Tranmere's lead, before Paul Thirlwell and Danny Graham combined for the later to halve the deficit for Carlisle.

Steven Jennings extended Tranmere's lead on 66 minutes as they bounced back from last weekend's loss at Millwall in style.

Moore slammed the ball into the top corner of the net 13 minutes from time as Tranmere ran riot late on.

Bristol Rovers 0 Colchester United 0

Bristol Rovers keeper Steve Phillips was in inspired form as Colchester were held by a determined Pirates side at The Memorial Ground.

Phillips twice denied the visitors, who are still unbeaten in six matches, with a fine save just ten minutes from time to deny former Tottenham winger Mark Yeates.

And the hosts might have snatched all three points in the final minute but Jo Kuffour was denied at the last second with a fine tackle from Alan Maybury.

Northampton Yown 5 Crewe Alexandra 1

Billy Clarke enjoyed the perfect debut for Northampton, notching a stunning hat-trick in his first appearance for his new side.

Clarke, on loan from Ipswich, put The Cobblers ahead in just the second minute with a low drive into the left-hand corner before Crewe captain Julien Baudet was dismissed for a professional foul.

Any hopes Crewe had of getting back into the match were dealt a severe blow when Danny Jackman's free-kick doubled the hosts' lead just a minute later.

Crewe pulled a goal back through Colin Daniel on the half hour mark but Clarke headed his second on 54 minutes and Liam Davis added a fourth before Clarke rounded off a dream debut for Northampton from the spot.

Walsall 1 Hereford United 1

Relegation-threatened Hereford escaped from the Midlands with a precious point as Stephen Guinan scored a crucial second-half penalty.

It looked as though Hereford were in for a tough afternoon as Walsall went in front on 33 minutes through Troy Deeney.

But with time ticking away, Matt Done was fouled by Dwayne Mattis, allowing Guinan to score his tenth goal of the season and salvage a point for Hereford.

Southend United 0 Yeovil Town 1

Yeovil picked up a win at the fifth time of asking as The Glovers ended a winless recent sequence at Southend.

Cheltenham Town 2 Brighton & Hove Albion 2

Adam Hinshelwood's last-gasp header salvaged a point for Brighton who have still only won once since November.

Ian Westlake, on loan from Leeds, rifled in the opening goal from 20 yards out, leaving Brighton keeper John Sullivan rooted to the spot.

Chris Westwood nodded The Robins into a two-goal lead at Whaddon Road, after Sullivan failed to hang on to Alex Russell's fierce drive.

Former Reading forward Nicky Forster pulled a goal back for the visitors with a powerful header, from a Dean Cox corner, on 77 minutes before Hinshelwood rescued a draw for Brighton.
