Midson: Barnet switch

Jack Midson: An Oxford Don to a WimbleDon? (I'll get my coat)

AFC Wimbledon were voted into the League at its AGM in Cyprus last Friday, allowing the club to start new contract talks with the players that helped them win the Blue Square Premier play-off final last month, as well as continuing the search to boost the squad up to League Two standard.

And one player that could be putting pen to paper is our former loanee from Oxford United, who is still remembered for those two goals at Cheltenham if little else, striker Jack Midson.

Brown told www.croydonguardian.co.uk: "We have already had preliminary talks with all of our players and now we have been voted into the league we hope to make the contracts concrete this week. Hopefully, by the end of the week we will have signed most of our current staff but there are a couple of issues and we will see. We are having talks with Jack and we are looking to sign him without a doubt and we hope to meet again this week. What we need at the moment is a centre half, to which I have held talks with a League Two player this week, and we will have talks with a forward this week too."

(Though they accept they are losing the odd player themselves: www.afcwimbledon.co.uk/news.php?Psection_id=2&Psub_section_id=1&Open=5938)

Carling Cup: Competition draw on Thursday

Carling Cup: Competition draw on Thursday 10am

Meanwhile, on the day of the Carling Cup first round draw proper, the Football League's two newest clubs will have to meet at Crawley's Broadfield Stadium on Friday, July 29th in a rarely seen prelimenary round, only the second time we believe.

The game is necessary as holders Birmingham were relegated, but due to their Europa League commitments will not compete in the competition until round three.

The Carling Cup therefore requires one club fewer in the first round, so the two clubs placed lowest in the domestic league system last season will meet in a one-off game.

The all new Crazy Gang have been robbed of the chance to play the likes of West Ham, Crystal Palace or, er, Barnet, after being forced to play the tie against fellow promoted side Crawley Town.

But, because Birmingham City's qualification for the Europa League gives them a bye to round three, the League decided the best course of action to even up the numbers up would be for the two lowest ranked teams in the competition to face oft, eight days before the start of the League Two season.

Beats a friendly against Grimsby I suppose!

Dons boss Terry Brown told www.croydonguardian.co.uk: "We are bitterly disappointed and I know Crawley Town are too having spoken to Steve Evans. The idea of the Carling Cup is that you play a side from a higher league you have never played before and one of us will miss out on that opportunity. It is something beyond our control though and a Football League decision. We will start off on a good note with the Football League and try and beat Crawley."
