Evans: Remaining positive

Evans: The old fat boy remains positive

Creepies boss Steve Evans had no complaints after Crawley were held to a 0-0 draw at Bristol Rovers, admitting his side were below standard.

The best chances of a dour game came in the second half, Matt Tubbs testing Rovers goalkeeper Michael Poke shortly after the restart, although there was very little to excited about at the Memorial Stadium.

Evans said: "You wouldn't have been able to tell which team was where in the table during the first half and we didn't play well. But we are not too unhappy. We improved to dominate much of the second half and had one great chance to win the game, which we couldn't take. It's back to the training ground on Monday for more hard work. We weren't able to get on the front foot, but that was partly due to Rovers showing a lot of commitment. Perhaps the thought of a couple of prospective new managers being in the stands brought a bit extra out of them and we know we are the big scalp in this division."

Thanks to the Pirates efforts at Crawley the Shrimpers moved to the top of the table with thier high-scoring victory at Northampton.

Crawley beat Bristol City in the FA Cup but they found Bristol Rovers tougher opposition as a goalless draw saw them slip from first place to third.

Southend took advantage of Crawley's dropped points by hitting back to beat relegation-threatened Northampton 5-2 in a thriller at Sixfields, with Liam Dickinson and Bilel Mohsni both netting twice.

Cheltenham also climbed above Crawley after extending their unbeaten run to ten games with a 2-0 win against Aldershot, thanks to goals from Luke Summerfield and Kaid Mohamed.

Swindon caused an FA Cup upset last weekend by beating Wigan and they proved too strong for Rotherham at the Don Valley Stadium as Matt Ritchie's first-half double set them on their way to a 2-1 victory.

Shane Cansdell-Sherriff and Mark Wright were on target for Shrewsbury in a 2-0 triumph at home to Gillingham in a match pitting together two sides fighting to stay in the play-off zone.

Hereford came out on top in the battle between two teams in the bottom four, Yoann Arquin scoring the only goal of the game against Dagenham & Redbridge.

Plymouth had been propping up the rest of the division but overtook Northampton by virtue of a 2-1 win over Burton.

Accrington's ten-match unbeaten run came to a surprising halt at home to struggling Barnet, as Ricky Holmes, Mark Hughes and Sam Deering struck to seal a 3-0 victory for the Bees.

Another long run was brought to an end at Vale Park, as AFC Wimbledon came from behind to beat Port Vale 2-1 and claim a first win in 13 attempts.

Torquay's encouraging form continued with a 2-1 success against Macclesfield at Moss Rose to boost their hopes of pushing into the play-off spots.

There were three goals in a topsy-turvy final five minutes at Bradford as Morecambe came away with a 2-2 draw.

There was also late drama at Oxford as substitute Greg Pearson netted the winner for Crewe.

News Update

Chairman Nick Higgs expects Bristol Rovers to announce a new manager in a matter of days, following the 0-0 draw with Crawley.

The fixture is likely to be caretaker boss Shaun North's last in charge while Richard Money, Keith Curle, Paul Ince and Geraint Williams are all thought to be in the running, while North has not applied for the job but has now taken four points from two league games in charge.

Speaking about possible candidates, Higgs said: "We are down to a shortlist of four and hope to be in a position to make an announcement by Wednesday or Thursday."

After seeing Rovers take a battling point against the side who had started the day at the top of the table, North said: "I am happy at the club, but I have absolutely no idea what the future holds for me.  I believe in myself as a coach and I am ambitious enough to want to work in the Premier League one day. Having said that, I am realistic enough to know that I could be out of a job in a matter of days. Whatever happens I've enjoyed my first taste of being a manager and the lads did me proud again. A lot of hard work went into the game in training and the players gave their all. The supporters were good too and their support made a difference in the final 10 minutes when we came under pressure."
