Big Freeze can't save Man. City & Stoke

The Fourth Round Draw is live in ITV1 Sunday January 4 at 15.25.

Hartlepool were the second team through, after Tottenham's 3-1 win over Wigan on Friday, as Stoke City were shocked 2-0 in the 13.00 kick-off. Michael Nelson opened the scoring before a special strike from little David Foley confirmed the giantkilling.

Manchester City paraded Wayne Bridge, the latest of their big-money recruits, before being soundly beaten at home 3-0 by Nottingham Forest. Nathan Tyson and Robert Earnshaw handed the watching Billy Davies a 2-0 half time lead and Joe Garner pounced on a defensive lapse to make the game safe.

Chelsea looked to be heading through, courtesy of Salomon Kalou's opener, but Southend United gave them a warning when Peter Clarke hit the bar. The same player silenced the home fans to earn a 1-1 draw and a replay at Roots Hall when beating Carlo Cudicini in the final minute. Arsenal toiled in the first half against Plymouth Argyle but scored soon after the interval through captain Robin van Persie. Nicklas Bendtner claimed the second, although it may go down as a David Gray own goal, and, after Karl Duguid pulled one back, van Persie rounded things off at 3-1 by crashing home off the underside of the bar.

Hull City and Newcastle United played out a 0-0 draw with Shay Given keeping a clean sheet after his lawyer said he wanted to quit the Tyneside club on Friday. The Irishman needed a bit of luck when Michael Turner hit the inside of a post and there were some feisty challenges in the first half, including one involving old foes Craig Fagan and Danny Guthrie.

Macclesfield were beaten 1-0 at home to Everton with Leon Osman on the scoresheet. The plucky hosts came close late on but Tim Howard and company stood firm to see David Moyes's men through in the live Setanta Ireland fixture.

Middlesbrough were given a scare by Barrow but triumphed 2-1 with Afonso Alves netting both to get back amongst the goals. Jason Walker made a fight of it with a 79th minute effort and there were seven minutes of injury time after a suspected broken leg was sustained by Mike Pearson.

Portsmouth, the holders, drew 0-0 with Bristol City with Niko Kranjcar, Sylvain Distin and Peter Crouch all going close for Tony Adams's side. They face a tough-looking replay at Ashton Gate.

Andy Johnson was Fulham's hero with both goals in a 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday. The shaven-headed striker struck decisively late on after Tommy Spurr's long-range effort cancelled out his opening goal.

A cracking match in deepest Gloucestershire saw Forest Green, in the third round for the first time in their history, cruelly beaten 4-3 by Derby. Jonathan Smith and Alex Lawless handed the hosts an early 2-0 advantage but Rob Hulse and Martin Albrechtsen had The Rams level by the break. Paul Stonehouse restored Forest Green's lead but Paul Green equalised and Lawless was sent off to allow Steve Davies to convert the penalty winner.

Ross McCormack and Joe Ledley did the damage for last season's finalists Cardiff City as they powered past under-strength Reading 2-0.

Arturo Lupoli came off the bench to force a replay for Norwich City at Charlton Athletic. Youngster Jonjo Shelvey's first-ever goal had put Phil Parkinson's Addicks in front.

Coventry City avoided a potential upset against Kidderminster thanks to second half goals by Leon McKenzie and Leon Best in a 2-0 win.

The all non-league affair was won by Kettering, 2-1 against Eastwood Town. Craig Westcarr and Daniel Sneddon were on the scoresheet for the home side at Rockingham Road with Paul Robinsono replying.

Leicester City and Crystal Palace must replay after a 0-0 draw while Millwall and Crewe Alexandra had a rather more entertaining clash. Marc Laird cancelled out Dennis Lawrence's headed opener before The Lions went in front through Andy Frampton, aided by a goalkeeping mistake. Danny Shelley's first goal for Crewe brings the teams back to Gresty Road with a 2-2 draw.

Queens Park Rangers and Burnley failed to hit the net in a goalless encounter and a solitary strike from Torquay's Matthew Green was enough to cause a major upset with Championship side Blackpool dumped out at Plainmoor.

Grzegorz Rasiak came off the bench to see Watford past Scunthorpe United 1-0 while Chesterfield are out, again, after a 3-0 defeat at Ipswich Town. A Jonathan Walters penalty and further goals by Pablo Counago and Jonathan Stead settled matters.

Sunderland exacted revenge for their home Premier League thumping by Bolton Wanderers with a 2-1 triumph. Strike duo Kenwyne Jones and Djibril Cisse got in on the act but a flukey Ebi Smolarek strike made it a nervous climax for Ricky Sbragia against his old team.

West Brom were pegged back by Peterborough United in the closing stages as Craig Mackail-Smith, who had earlier hit the woodwork, made it 1-1. The Baggies had led through Jonas Olsson's glancing header in the 63rd minue.

West Ham were too strong for last season's surprise package Barnsley as they ran out 3-0 victors. Herita Ilunga's early goal was his first for The Hammers and a Mark Noble penalty and Carlton Cole effort wrapped things up. Kieron Dyer came off the bench to make his comeback from a long-term injury.

Birmingham v Wolves, Cheltenham v Doncaster, Leyton Orient v Sheffield United and Histon v Swansea were all postponed due to the freezing weather.

The visitors went ahead on six minutes through Mark Allott's fine 25-yard volley, which provoked a lively response from Huddersfield,

Michael Collins lobbed a deserved equaliser in the second half after a good through ball from Keigan Parker.

With three minutes left Oldham's top scorer Lee Hughes could have won it but headed over the bar from close range.
