All played Tuesday January 13 - F.A. Cup Third Round

Peterborough United 0 West Brom 2

On-loan Arsenal striker Jay Simpson opened his account for the club with a stunning effort from 25 yards in the 18th minute before Paul Robinson wrapped things up eight minutes before half time.

Bristol City 0 Portsmouth 2

England striker Peter Crouch handed the Premier League side the lead with a controversial first-half strike, after appearing to handle in his own box in the build-up to the goal.

With the seconds ticking away, Portsmouth rounded off proceedings with Niko Kranjcar applying the finishing touches to a quick break from Nadir Belhadj.

City could have dragged themselves back into the match at the death, but Nicky Maynard missed a late penalty after Sol Campbell had upended the striker in the box.

Burnley 2 QPR 1

QPR had looked the more likely to go through after Samuel Carmine put them ahead in the 54th minute, and they hit the post shortly afterwards.

However, Steve Thompson levelled on the hour after Robbie Blake had had a shot blocked, sending the game into extra time.

And, in the 120th minute as the teams were gearing up for penalties, an error from Damion Stewart allowed Jay Rodriguez to break clear and send the ball past Radek Cerny for a late, late win.

Birmingham 0 Wolves 2

It was the Wolves who struck a psychological blow in the Championship promotion race.

Andrew Keogh broke the offside trap to give the visitors the lead in the 38th minute at St Andrews.

And, after turning down a penalty appeal after a challenge on Marcus Bent, Howard Webb risked further infuriating the home fans as he was inadvertently involved in the build-up when Sam Vokes made it 2-0 in the 51st minute.

Cameron Jerome hit the crossbar as Birmingham tried to get back into it, but to no avail.

Norwich City 0 Charlton Athletic 1

Darren Ambrose fired home from outside the area after only six minutes to give Charlton the lead.

And while Norwich started to come back into it, they were uninspired in the second half and failed to find an equaliser.

Crewe Alexandra 2 Millwall 3

Luke Murphy fired Crewe ahead in the seventh minute, but that lead lasted only seconds as a mistake from goalkeeper Steve Collis allowed Scott Barron to level the scores.

Neil Harris then put Millwall ahead in the 54th minute with a toe poke from close range, but that lasted only four minutes before Shaun Miller scored a scrappy goal from a Billy Jones free-kick to make it 2-2.

But Millwall progressed when Zak Whitbread headed home from a corner for his first goal in over a year.

Histon 1 Swansea Town 2

The Blue Square Premier side looked to be holding their own until Gorka Pintado put the ball into the top corner from 25 yards in the 22nd minute.

Seven minutes before half time, it was 2-0 when Guillem Bauza turned home after Andrea Orlandi had left his marker for dead.

Pintado should have made it 3-0 late on when he hit the post from the penalty spot after a foul on substitute Nathan Dyer - and they nearly paid the price when Josh Simpson bundled home to make it 2-1 with six minutes to play.

But Roberto Martinez's side held on to book their place in the fourth round.

Leyton Orient 1 Sheffield United 4

Orient took the lead in the 38th minute when John Melligan converted a penalty after Matthew Kilgallon had handballed.

But Greg Halford levelled the scores after goalkeeper Glenn Morris flapped at a corner on 59 minutes, and they were ahead three minutes later when Darius Henderson released Billy Sharp.

It was 3-1 on 69 minutes when a poor corner allowed The Blades to break, and Kyle Naughton made no mistake on the counter-attack.

And Naughton turned provider in the 78th minute, crossing for Halford to head home his second of the game.

Cheltenham Town 0 Doncaster Rovers 0

Paul Heffernan hit the inside of the post for Doncaster in the second half, but neither side was able to make the breakthrough.

Wednesday January 14 - F.A. Cup Third Round Replays

Southend put up a brave and hard working display but it wasn't to be enough against their Premiership opponents.

Newcastle United 0 Hull City 1

Daniel Cousin's late winner ensured Hull will welcome Millwall to the KC Stadium in the FA Cup fourth round.

A strong-looking Newcastle team started brightly and Xisco scooped the ball over from just six yards out while Nicky Butt's header hit the bar.

But the hosts became nervy and a largely second-string Hull broke the deadlock when unmarked Cousin tucked in from eight yards in the 82nd minute.

Michael Owen then had a chance to equalise but sent a wild header over.

That was just one of three gilt-edged opportunities passed up by the England striker on a hugely disappointing night for Newcastle who, judging by manager Joe Kinnear's team selection, clearly wanted to progress in this competition.

Hull achieving victory in this third-round replay without eight of boss Phil Brown's first-choice players will also rub salt into the wounds on a night when he and Kinnear were sent to the stands by referee Phil Dowd for clashing on the touchline.

Watched by a crowd of 31,380, the Magpies enjoyed the better of the first half.

They went close to a 21st-minute opener when Butt headed Danny Guthrie's free-kick against the crossbar with goalkeeper Matt Duke beaten.

Both managers were then sent to the stands by Dowd following an angry exchange of views in the wake of Fabricio Coloccini's late challenge on Cousin.

And Newcastle were handed a glorious opportunity 11 minutes before the break, as Hull defenders Paul McShane and Kamil Zayatte ran into each other as they attempted to collect a loose ball.

But Owen, one-on-one with Duke, blasted his effort high over the bar.

Within two minutes of the restart, Owen's low shot was turned round the post by Duke after the forward beat the offside trap to run on to Damien Duff's clever pass over the top.

Hull skipper George Boateng was carried off in the 67th minute after a crunching block tackle by Butt, with Ian Ashbee taking his place.

With 20 minutes remaining Charles N'Zogbia embarked upon a mazy run to the edge of the Hull box, but his shot was well blocked by Zayatte.

But the deadlock was broken when Cousin, with plenty of time and space, turned in Richard Garcia's cross.

Newcastle's Kazenga LuaLua drove across the face of goal late on but it raced too far ahead of fellow substitute Andy Carroll before Owen failed to send the tie into extra-time only to head over another Guthrie cross.

The final whistle then brought a chorus of boos from the stands as Newcastle's season took another turn for the worse.

Crystal Palace 2 Leicester City 1

Goals from Crystal Palace duo Paul Ifill and Sean Scannell sent Leicester crashing out of the FA Cup and set up a fourth round clash with Watford.

Ifill struck six minutes before the interval, beating keeper David Martin to his left with a low deflected shot.

Striker Scannell made it 2-0 shortly after the break, converting Alan Lee's pass with a close-range strike.

Max-Alain Gradel ensured a nervy finish with his injury-time goal but Crystal Palace held on to progress.

Palace were worthy winners with Lee twice going close early on with a shot from a tight angle and a decent header from Danny Butterfield's cross.

League One side Leicester were dealt a blow midway through the first half when centre-back Aleksander Tunchev was stretchered off following an accidental collision in his own area.

Steve Howard had Leicester's best chance of the half when he looped a header on to the roof of the net before Ifill broke the deadlock.

Scannell made the game safe when he latched on to Lee's through ball and lifted the ball over Martin for 2-0.

Leicester pushed for a way back into the game and Julian Speroni saved well from Ashley Chambers' fierce drive before Matt Oakley poked wide from an open goal.

Gradel gave visitors hope when he swept home Ashley Chambers's cross in the fourth minute of injury time, but by that time it was too late for Leicester to find an equaliser.
